Arguably the best compact off-roader on the market, the X-Trail is good to drive both on the road as well as off it. There's a decent range of trim levels and engines, while the cars are generally well built. However, if turbodiesel examples aren't serviced on the button, things can get very costly, with engine or turbo failures likely - so make sure the service book is fully stamped before buying.

Key Dates
10/01X-Trail debuts in 2.0 petrol or 2.2-litre turbodiesel forms.
12/02There's now a 2.5-litre petrol option.
12/03Facelift brings minor restyle to nose and tail, plus more equipment. The 2.2dCi supersedes the 2.2Di; a welcome move.
1/05All cars get equipment upgrades.
  • Timing chain guides fracture on the 2.2-litre turbodiesel, leading to rattles from the chain and tensioner - especially between 1500 and 2000rpm.
  • ECUs and injectors can give problems on 136bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesels. Turbochargers on this engine can also fail - expensively.
  • Intercoolers can also give problems, so make sure the engine bay isn't getting unduly hot.
  • Be very wary of a turbodiesel engine running on; the turbocharger could be about to fail.
  • Rear wheelarches can rust.
  • Ensure underside isn't damaged from off-roading.
  • Has the car been used for towing? If so, what has it had to pull?
