The original Honda Accord was launched in 1976 and in conjunction with the Civic, it was this crucial model that underpinned Honda's global growth. But sadly for Honda, by the time the model faded away in the UK in 2015 (but remained on sale in overseas markets), the Accord had become something of an embarrassment. It's not as though the stylish saloon and estate were bad cars - they were just overshadowed by newer, more capable rivals. Dependabe and packed with standard kit, the lack of a hatchback option reduces the Accord's appeal for many, but the estate offers decent practicality in a very stylish package.

Key Dates
6/08The eighth-generation Accord arrives with 2.0 or 2.4-litre VTEC petrol engines or a 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel.
1/09The diesel is now offered with an automatic gearbox.
3/11A revised Accord is unveiled, with revised lights and bumpers, cleaner engines and an upgraded interior. Chassis tweaks improve the ride and handling while Active Cornering Lights and High Beam Support are available optionally.
Checklist
  • From the outset there was a choice of saloons and estates, with Trailer Stability Assist standard throughout, for those keen to tow.
  • Corrosion can break out around the sliding glass sunroof. The older the car, the more likely there is to be rust.
  • The GT pack brings 17-inch alloys, firmer suspension, bodykit and half-leather trim for a sportier drive and looks.
  • The front fog lights feature glass that's too thin, so they get cracked by stones thrown up by the car in front.
  • Diesel-engined Accords can suffer from clutch failure within 30,000 miles, sometimes because of dual-mass flywheel problems.
  • Cars built up to 2010 can suffer from the trim along the top of the windscreen coming loose when the glue dries out.
  • Diesel particulate filters have proved to be a problem, even for owners who regularly drive at high speed. New filters are very costly.
