The chances are you didn't notice the second-generation Nissan Note arrive in late 2013, or leave little more than three years later, when it was replaced by an all-new Micra. The Note was a perfectly decent car if not exactly a stand-out product - and it's cars such as these that often make some of the best used buys. Perfectly competent they're invisible to most used car buyers, and as a result they often represent excellent value for those who just want no-hassle transport that's easy to own and cheap to run.

Key Dates
10/13The Note Mk2 reaches showrooms with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine in 79bhp or turbocharged (DIG-S) 97bhp forms, or there's an 89bhp 1.5 dCi diesel. There are four trim levels
5/15A facelift brings n-tec trim (between Acenta Premium and Tekna), a refreshed exterior design and extra kit for some trims.
7/16The Black Edition features a body kit, 16-inch alloy wheels and gloss black interior trim.
  • If you want an auto you'll have to buy a DIG-S edition; it's the only one available with a CVT gearbox, dubbed XTronic.
  • Most Notes come with a sliding rear seat - but not entry-level models.
  • If the front suspension is noisy it's because the anti-roll bar bushes need to be replaced. Nissan redesigned these to quiten things down.
  • Water leaks into the cabin aren't unknown. It can be the windscreen not sealing or a seal on the bulkhead that isn't doing its job properly.
  • The Note comes with a tyre inflation kit but its cen be removed along with its housing, so you can fit a space saver spare wheel into the well instead.
  • Some owners have found that their Notes can get through tyres surprisingly quickly, so check how much tread is left.
  • Make sure that all the lights work because the LED tail lights and the headlight bulbs are a pain to replace - or have to be done by a dealer.
  • A sliding rear seat is fitted to the ACenta Premium and above - and it's a feature that's well worth having.
