Forget the hand-me-down Jaguar XJS base - the DB7 is thoroughly deserving of the hallowed Aston Martin crest. With those gorgeous lines, fabulous six or 12-cylinder powerplants and reasonable purchase costs for most derivatives, the DB7 is perhaps the most sensible ultra-prestigious GT around. But V12 cars are far more costly to run than their six-cylinder siblings, so don't rush out to buy a Vantage unless you know what you're letting yourself in for.

Checklist
  • Make sure the car has a full service history and has been attended to when necessary.
  • Cobra alarms on early cars can lead to flat batteries.
  • Back axles need fresh oil every 30,000 miles, or they wear out.
  • New panels are costly so check there's no damage - especially to the nose.
  • Kerbed alloys aren't cheap to repair or replace.
  • Low nose can get scraped on speed bumps.
  • Air conditioning leaks and can be pricey to fix.
  • Fresh tyres are expensive, so ensure there's plenty of tread left.
